Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid extended condolences to his counterpart in Bangladesh, Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen, MP, following the fire in Dhaka’s Mirpur neighbourhood late Friday.

In his message, the minister stated that he was deeply saddened by the news and extended sympathy to the government and people of Bangladesh, and commiserations to the affected families.

"I wish for swift and successful recovery efforts for those who are directly affected by this tragedy", he said.

According to foreign media reports, the massive fire burnt through hundred of shanties in the neighbourhood while most residents were away to celebrate Eid al-Adha. Although no casualties were reported, the fire left thousands of people homeless and several injured. The cause of the fire is yet unknown.
