The captain of the tug boat 'Virgo 9', which was used by former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb in his attempt to flee the country, was placed under a travel ban, forbidding him from leaving Maldives.
Local media Mihaaru reported that the captain is Vivien Gunawan, an Indonesian national.
Violating a Supreme Court-imposed travel ban, Adeeb attempted to flee aboard the Singapore-flagged tug, posing as a crew-member on July 27.
Indian authorities intercepted the former vice president on August 1 near the coast of Tuticorin Port, Thoothukudi. He was successfully extradited on August 4.
Following the events, Virgo 9 was brought to Maldives for further investigation into the ex-VP's escape attempt. The boat is not allowed to leave Maldives without permission from Maldives Customs Service.
Although the captain is under a travel ban, no restrictions were placed on the rest of the nine crew members.
As per the local agent for the tug, Trans Link, they have yet to find out how Adeeb boarded.
