Members of the Presidential Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances departed to India on Wednesday to seek forensic expertise for their investigations.

The members of the presidential commission, which has been afforded multiple legal authorities, did not disclose further information regarding their visit to India. However, local media report that the commission is seeking technical assistance for several major investigations.

The commission, which was formed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih soon after he assumed office, is tasked with investigating a number of cold cases, including the murders of former lawmaker Dr Afrasheem Ali and blogger Yameen Rasheed, and the disappearance of journalist Ahmed Rilwan.

According to the commission, the investigations of these cases are nearing completion, and the members have shared some of their findings with the president as well.

Some of the cases the commission is tasked with include those involving allegations of gross police negligence. Hence, the commission was formed without the involvement of the police to ensure independent investigations.

The commission closed a murder case and forwarded charges against suspects to the Prosecutor General's Office last week.

The commission also revealed that it has solved the cases of Dr Afrasheem Ali, Yameen Rasheed and Ahmed Rilwan. The members stated that their investigative reports on the cases will be publicised after ensuring the prosecution of the perpetrators.
