MVR 457 million generated as Green Tax

The state received a total of MVR 457 million as Green Tax during the first six months of 2019.

Statistic reports publicised by the Ministry of Finance show that the highest amount of tax within this period was generated in the months of March and April. MVR 83.1 million was obtained as Green Tax in March while MVR 83.6 million was earned in April.

During the first six months of this year, the lowest revenue of MVR 56.4 million was generated in June.

Compared to the same period of last year, this year's income saw an increase of MVR 10 million.

MVR 413 million was generated as Green Tax from resorts, which comprises of 90 percent of the total amount earned. MVR 17 million was earned from guest houses.

Kaafu Atoll, boasting the most number of resorts and guest houses in the country, contributes the most to Green Tax.

Green Tax, taken from tourists at a rate of USD 6 per day, was first issued in 2015. At first, foreigners without a resident visa staying at resorts, hotels and safaris were subjected to Green Tax, until guest houses were added to the list in October 2016.
