Maldives Police Service, on Monday, began investigating into a mugging that took place near the Western Union in capital city Male'.

According to a Police spokesperson, the incident was reported at approximately 2114 hrs. No further details were shared by the law enforcement agency.

In 2016, A group of masked men armed with knives robbed the Western Union branch in male' after tying up several employees. Police managed to recover more than MVR 6 million from the heist.

Additionally, incidences of theft and burglary have increased across the country. During the month of July, cash amounting to MVR 150,000 and USD 15,000 was stolen from an individual passing by City Online Asia in Hulhumale'.

Although perpetrators were identified as being a group of four helmet-clad men on two motorcycles, at present, no arrests have been made in connection to the crime.
