Criminal Court convicted three men of the torture and murder of a Bangladeshi expatriate in Fuvahmulah in 2011.

Shareeful was found brutally murdered in an isolated property. Facing conviction for his murder are M D Salaam, Shareef and Alaal.

Criminal Court, on Sunday, ordered a jail sentence of 20 years for M D Salaam and Shareef while Alaal was sentenced to 17 years and six months for acting as an accomplice.

Despite being convicted of murder, they were not served the death penalty, citing an inability to contact the victim’s surviving family. According to the penal code, the penalty for murder is 10 years of imprisonment.

However, having taken the circumstances surrounding the incident into consideration, the court levied a stricter sentence of 17 years and six months; Salaam and Shareef’s sentences were set to reflect the degree of their involvement.

The court order stated that although those charged denied their guilt, the accused previously delivered a detailed confession to the crime, inclusive of visual representations, and photographic evidence.

Reportedly, the statement also confirms that their confession and witness testimonials as accurate, revealing the location where they disposed of Shareeful’s key after looting his room. The stolen items were later discovered in one of the convict's rooms.

Police affirmed that the guilty party had pointed out some of the items themselves.

Even if new evidence were to come to light that would refute all evidence found from the date of the crime to present day, their confessions would still be sufficient to charge them with the crime, asserted the court order.
