The Criminal Court, on Monday, added ten days to the remand period of the leading teacher arrested earlier the same day over allegations of repeated sexual harassment against his students.

According to police, the 46-year-old local was apprehended in a central island of Maldives over accusations of offensive sexual advances towards both male and female students on various occasions. Several complaints were already filed against the teacher.

As the issue deals with sexual abuse of minors, the police did not reveal the island at which the incident took place. However, the information was disclosed to the Ministry of Education.

Ministry of Gender and Family stated they had filed the case at the police and that they would aid the police in their investigation.

Recently, the police launched an investigation into a case regarding an expatriate teacher sexually harassing a woman aboard a flight. The lecturer at Maldives National University was subsequently suspended.
