Ministry of Health, on Wednesday, announced plans to establish seven additional hospitals across Maldives.

At a media briefing hosted at Dharubaaruge, the ministry's Senior Project Officer Abdulla Areez informed local media ‘Mihaaru’ that third parties would be contracted to design the new hospitals during the upcoming week and that construction would commence within the year.

Hospitals will be built in Ihavandhoo in Haa Alif Atoll, Velidhoo in Noonu Atoll, Meedhoo in Raa Atoll, Hinnavaru in Lhaviyani Atoll and Thimarafushi in Thaa Atoll as well as the islands of Maamigili and Gadhdhoo which are both located in Gaafu Dhaal Atoll.

Areez stated that the hospitals, each possessing a 30-bed capacity, would be equipped to provide outpatient department (OPD) services with specialist doctors, conduct scans and carry out surgeries.

The government has begun working towards improving medical facilities available in the country. The ministry previously revealed plans to upgrade ten hospitals to tertiary standards with a budget of MVR 800 million.

Development efforts will initially be focused on Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital, Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital, Gan Regional Hospital, Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital and Hithadhoo Regional Hospital.
