MDP parliamentary group election scheduled for July

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Monday scheduled Parliamentary Group (PG) elections for July 2.

The deadline to apply for PG positions will remain open until the end of June.

The vacant positions include PG leader, secretary-general, deputy secretary-general and chief whip. Slots for two deputy leaders and six additional party whips are also open.

Winning 65 seats, MDP secured a supermajority during the parliamentary elections held in April 2019. MDP Leader and former president Mohamed Nasheed currently holds the position of Parliament Speaker. MDP representative Galolhu North MP Eva Abdulla is the Deputy Speaker.

The parliament has requested each party to disclose details of their Parliamentary Group leaders and whips.

Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem (Redwave Saleem) serves as the parliamentary group leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), the main opposition party. PG leader for People's National Congress (PNC) is Maduvvari MP and former Minister of Defence Adam Shareef Umar. Jumhooree Party's PG leader is Maamigili MP and prominent businessman Qasim Ibrahim.
