Maldives, India will sign 6 MoUs during PM Modi's visit: foreign ministry

Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday revealed that the governments of Maldives and India will sign six agreements in five sectors, during the state visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.

Speaking at a press conference held at the ministry, State Minister Ahmed Khaleel noted that the Memorandums of Understanding include cooperation in the fields of health, customs, skills development, and conducting capacity building programmes for Maldivian civil servants.

The two nations will also sign an agreement to establish a passenger and cargo services ferry between Maldives and India.

Moreover, Khaleel shared that PM Modi will inaugurate the coastal surveillance radar system established with Indian aid, as well as Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)'s composite training centre in Maafilaafushi, Lhaviyani Atoll.

PM Narendra Modi is scheduled to arrive Saturday afternoon in capital Male'. The official welcome ceremony is to be held in the Republic Square at 1600 hours, following which the prime minister and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will hold official talks and the MOU signing ceremony at the President's Office.

After a joint press conference with the president, PM Modi will attend the parliament sitting, upon the invitation of Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, and give his special address.

A banquet in honour of the prime minister, hosted by the president and first lady, will be held late Saturday at Kurumba Village resort.

PM Modi will also call on other top government officials and politicians, including Vice President Faisal Naseem, Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla, and Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim.

The prime minister is scheduled to depart early Sunday.
