The parliament on Wednesday approved to appoint Thulhaadhoo MP Hisaan Hussain as the parliamentary representative to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The newly sworn-in 19th parliament passed Hisaan's appointment with 80 votes unanimously in her favour. She was the only nomination to the post.

The ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s parliamentary group also approved Hisaan's nomination unanimously, during a gathering held late Monday. She was nominated by Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef and seconded by Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb.

The last parliamentary representative in JSC during the 18th parliament was Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon, the son of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Hisaan, who holds a First Degree and Masters in Law, initially served as a state attorney in the Attorney General's Office. She also filled the position of assistant attorney general during Gayoom's presidency.

Following her resignation from the AG Office, Hisaan then joined MDP. During the party's first administration, she served as the Legal Affairs Secretary at the President's Office, and was a reputed advocate for human rights.

Furthermore, she was notably involved in compiling the sector on Judicial Reform, included in MDP's parliamentary manifesto 'Agenda 19'.

During her tenure as a lawyer, Hisaan also advocated for several high profile political figures, including President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, former President Mohamed Nasheed, and former Parliament Speaker Qasim Ibrahim. She also represented former Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed in court.

The 10-member JSC features the newly elected Speaker Nasheed, Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath and Civil Service Commission's President Dr Ali Shameem.

The remaining members in addition to Hisaan are Supreme Court representative Abdulla Areef, High Court representative Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, President's representative Masthoor Husny, the Parliament's citizen representative Abdul Hannan Ahmed, Mohamed Easaafulhu who represents the Magistrate Courts, and Latheefa Gasim who was elected by the licensed lawyers of Maldives
