The Maldives ranks among the top destinations for Chinese youth travelling overseas for vacations, survey shows.

According to the survey conducted in Asia by Agility Research and Strategy, one of the world’s largest research firms, the top three vacation getaways among the general youth of Asia are Hong Kong, Singapore and Japanese capital Tokyo. However, the survey shows that the most popular destinations chosen by Chinese youth are the Maldives, French capital Paris, Sydney in Australia and Taiwanese capital Taipei.

The results of the survey were unveiled at the “Millennial 2020” summit held in Singapore on September 7 and 8. The results show that 54 percent of the 900 participants, aged between 18 and 34, gave highest priority to the safety and security of a country when choosing vacation destinations. Meanwhile, 44 percent chose a country’s history and culture while 33 percent prioritised expenses.

In an effort to increase the number of Chinese tourists to the archipelago, Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) are currently participating in a tourism expo in China’s Sichuan Province to promote the Maldives. The corporation had stated that they chose Sichuan, a province where the Maldives had not promoted before, in order to expand the Chinese market.

China is the largest market for the Maldives’ tourism industry. However, the number of visitors from the Asian giant has been on a decline recently with only 36,456 tourists from China last July which was a decrease of 12.2 percent from the previous year.
