Drugs were found in the residence of four Maldivian students who were arrested by the Sri Lankan police, local media reported.

According to Mihaaru newspaper, the police also discovered and seized an unlicensed air gun in their residence.

The police interrogated and took statements from the four students regarding the issue. The four will be taken to court on Monday to decide their remands.

In addition to the students, Lankan police also arrested two Maldivian individuals upon finding a book containing information on the Islamic State (IS) inside their house. Local media reports that they were detained not long after they entered the country for medical purposes. The two of them are also scheduled to appear before the court on Monday.

Maldives' Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that six Maldivians are currently in the custody of Sri Lankan police. The ministry also assured that the Maldivian embassy is in contact with their families, to provide them with any information available.

While the authorities have not disclosed further information on them, local media reports that they have not been accused of being involved in the bombings that took place on Easter Sunday.

The IS recently claimed responsibility for the string of bomb blasts across Sri Lanka, which killed over 200 people and injured 500 others last Sunday. The authorities have since launched a mass crackdown to inspect residences across the country.
