Maldives on Sunday for the second time, since it joined this organisation fifty-one years ago, has boldly put forward its candidature to the United Nations Security Council for the term 2019-2020.

Foreign minister Dr Mohamed Asim made the announcement during the address to the UN General Assembly in New York, on Sunday noting that small states are under represented in main bodies of the UN.

"Every member of this organisation must have the opportunity to serve, must have an equal chance to be part of every body, especially the Security Council, to make the decisions that affect us all," Dr Asim who is the head of Maldives delegation to the UN stressed.

"We do not believe that might or size determines destiny; our ability, our motivation, our will to work, and our ideas do."

In 2008, Maldives has announced its candidature to the 15 member council. Though the then foreign minister Dr Ahmed Shaheed publicly said the Maldives would not pursue election, the candidature was reportedly not withdrawn.

Maldives would be vying for the representative of the Asia Pacific region, vacated by Kazakhstan. Indonesia has also announced candidature for the spot.
