Elections Commission (EC) declared there was insufficient basis to annul the votes of Kendhoo constituency in the parliamentary elections held on April 6.

Per the tentative results, MP Ali Hussain won the most votes from the constituency, defending his seat.

While the Jumhoory Party (JP) received 988 votes, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate Ahmed Latheef acquired 829 votes.

EC's announcement follows an investigation into complaints submitted regarding a Kendhoo ballot box.

"MDP candidates requested to annul the Kendhoo constituency votes. When we looked into the complaint, we did not find any reason to declare the ballots cast as invalid", said the President of Election Commission Ahmed Shareef.

Alleging a discrepancy in the number of people who voted for the ballot box in question, Latheef noted that although this issue was highlighted to the official in charge of the box, the voting proceeded with the issue unaddressed.

Further, Latheef claimed that the voter's list, list of voters who have their fingers marked at the polling station, and queue number list do not correlate. It is also alleged that an official had cast a ballot to the box after the polling time ended.
