The Maldivian National Defense Force (MNDF) released a statement requesting not to spread lies about the institution on social media.

In a statement released Saturday, MNDF noted that since the declaration of state of emergency by the government, there had been baseless rumours about the institution spread on social media. They requested the general public to refrain from spreading rumours that could incite hostility against the defense forces.

The statement came after former president and Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) leader Mohamed Nasheed claimed that some soldiers had searched the residence of MNDF’s head of intelligence, Brigadier General Abdul Raheem, on President Abdulla Yameen’s orders.

Although MNDF had not addressed Nasheed’s tweet directly, they said the statement was not a counter to any particular person’s comment but to address the recent upsurge of wild rumors regarding the institution.

The police had also released a similar statement defending their institution after Nasheed claimed that there were Maldivian insurgents who fought in the civil war of Syria and Iraq among their forces.

Maldives Police Service had also requested not to spread rumours that would create fear among the public and divisions within the institutions.
