President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced today that Laamu Gan will be transformed into a strong and robust health centre.

Addressing the residents of Laamu Gan during a meeting, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said the island is to become home to one of the Maldives’ tertiary hospitals, noting the government’s commitment to working under that policy.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu highlighted the issue of mental health problems in the Maldives, noting neglect and inadequate care as the main reasons. He further reiterated his pledge that was made during the presidential election to establish a mental health hospital of international standards which will aim to address this healthcare need.

He promised to build the hospital in Laamu Gan.

“We have decided to develop it to that level. We also pledged to establish an international mental health hospital”, he said. “This issue has persisted and grown in the Maldives due to negligence”.

He said that alongside the government’s efforts to expand tourism in Laamu atoll, the development of the mental health hospital will be implemented in a manner that it can be linked with medical tourism.

“Our aim is to make it accessible for medical tourism. This island has the potential for tourism and we will integrate the mental health hospital with tourism”.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu emphasized his commitment to making Laamu Gan a focal point for health services through development projects. He said that Laamu atoll is an important area for development.

He pledged to bring unprecedented levels of development to the atoll. Speaking at the meeting, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu noted that despite the island’s size, it has not been developed in an ideal manner. Therefore, the government’s aim is to bring necessary and important development to the island.

He noted that there was a housing crisis in Laamu Gan and mentioned the ongoing efforts to address it, including the construction of 100 housing units. He also said that there were plans to establish 40,000 housing units on the island within the next five years.

The residents of Laamu Gan made requests to the island council to increase the size of the land allocated to them a few years ago and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assured that their request would be considered after consulting with the relevant authorities.
