Following the end of Ramadan, State Trading Organization (STO) Managing Director Shimad Ibrahim has stated that the prices of food items were maintained at a satisfactory level during the holy month with advanced preparation.

Speaking in an interview with "Mihaaru," Shimad said that unlike other years, the prices of food items were kept low this Ramadan with cooperation of the traders.

STO usually imports flour and sugar, but also imports items that inflate in price especially during Ramadan. Shimad said that STO had imported onions, potatoes, eggs, lime and carrots into the market this Ramadan as well

STO has been importing onions since last December, and was able to close out the month of Ramadan with the prices controlled.

"However, some items became very expensive on the market. There were global supply chain issues as well. For example, the issue in the Red Sea and these changes in the fuel prices have impacted freights," said Shimad.

As the price of limes rose on the market, STO released a special shipment of limes. A shipment of carrots is also being launched into the market to control prices.

"We were able to maintain prices following the guidance of the President regarding Ramadan preparations," said Shimad. He added that priority would be given to control prices better during next Ramadan in light of their experiences this year.
