An independent committee has been set up to advise the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development on issues pertaining to land plots and flats allocated during the previous government.

According to the Ministry, the committee was formed to carry out the activities of the 'Binveriya’ (housing scheme for allocation of land plots) and ‘ Gedhoruveriya’ (housing scheme for allocation of flats) schemes last February with the guidance of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The committee has a total of five members. They are as follows:

- Aneesa Ahmed - Abdul Azeez Yoosuf - Aminath Eenas - Ahmed Ali Manik - Mariyam Fizaana Rasheed

The committee held its first meeting today. It is chaired by Aneesa Ahmed and the Vice Chairman is Abdul Azeez Yoosuf respectively.

The Anti-Corruption Commission of the Maldives (ACC) halted the allocation of flats under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme after the previous administration released a permanent list of flat recipients just two days before the end of their government.

After nearly a two-month investigation, ACC discovered that 60% of the 4000 flat recipients were ineligible. Of the remaining forms that met the required criteria, only 20.7% were accurate. However, another 19.7% that met the inclusion criteria, had information errors on their forms.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that the government had decided to review the list of applicants through an independent committee. He further assured the public that they can trust the members of the committee to make fair decisions and that the government does not want to make decisions on the allocation of flats solely on its own.
