President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Friday, stated that the government's aim for 2021 would be to revive the economy and revitalise the nation.

The president made the statement in his New Year message to the people of Maldives.

President Solih revealed that the socioeconomic vulnerabilities exposed due to the difficulties resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 were factored in during the formulation of a new developmental roadmap.

The president went on to detail some of the prominent projects planned for 2021, noting that the decentralisation of essential services would be a key objective for the year.

Reflecting on the economic repercussions of the pandemic, President Solih noted the government's plans to diversify the economy to reduce Maldives' dependence on the tourism sector, particularly highlighting the potential of the agriculture and fisheries industry.

Furthermore, he reiterated the incumbent administration's commitment to protecting the environment and safeguarding socially vulnerable groups throughout the process of working towards national progress.

Asserting that ensuring a happy and dignified life for all Maldivians would continue to be a core value of his administration, President Solih called on the public to act with compassion and solidarity while collectively working towards national prosperity.

He ended his statement with a prayer for the success of efforts to attain economic recovery and decentralised development, as well as good fortune, felicity and affluence in 2021.
