Parliament greenlights no-confidence motion against Riffath

The no confidence motion against Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath can be proceeded, according to the parliament.

The no-confidence motion against Rifath was submitted to the parliament by members aligning with Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, the opposition coalition of Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC), Jumhooree Party (JP) and Maldives National Party (MNP).

The parliament on Monday, tweeted that the motion against Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath will proceed in accordance with the parliamentary regulations.

A no-confidence motion against a minister can be submitted to parliament with the signatures of 10 members. However, for it to pass, it requires the approval of the majority of the total membership of the parliament, which is 43 member votes out of the 87 members.

According to the Constitution, ministers must be notified 14 days prior to the commencement of the debate on the issue in parliament. They have the right to present their defense through oral and written means.

While the recent no-confidence motion against Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has been dismissed by the parliament, the opposition has announced its intention to file similar motions against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
