The family of a deaf child has appealed the high court verdict after losing the malpractice lawsuit against a regional hospital.

The father has blamed an injection from a doctor at the Gaaf Dhaal regional hospital in southern Thinadhoo Island for causing permanent loss of hearing in his then-three-year-old daughter, Aishath Iyan, in July 2007.

After losing his lawsuit seeking compensation MVR7.1 million (US$460,440) against the health ministry at the civil court in 2009, Ihusan appealed its judgment at the appellate court.

However, both courts had ruled out medical negligence and denied compensation. The family had accused the hospital of doctoring the medical documents to cover up the negligence on the part of the doctor.

The Supreme Court has accepted the final appeal in the case and is set to start the trial later this week.
