President of the Maldives Olympics Committee (MOC) Mohamed Abdul Sattar said during the opening ceremony that this marks the first instance of Maldives hosting such a large sports meeting in its soil.
The meeting, set to last until Tuesday saw representatives of Commonwealth Member Countries located in the two regions participating.
Sattar added that Maldives also now claims the honor of becoming the first Asian country to host a CGF Asia-Oceania Meeting as well.
"This will become a historical event even for this region of ours," said Sattar.
Minister of Sports, Abdulla Rafiu expressed gratitude to the President of CGF Chris Jenkins OBE upon receiving approval from the CGF to host the meeting in Maldives.
This event of Maldives organizing the CGF Asia-Oceania Meeting in its soil will be recorded in history books, he assured.
"Commonwealth Games Federation is an association that facilitates numerous opportunities for Maldives in sports. This enables us to fortify relations we have with the CGF. And this also fosters a strong bond with our neighboring countries in the line of sports as well," said Rafiu.
Chris Jenkins said that deliberations on how the future of Commonwealth Games Federation will be shaped will also be proceeded at this meeting commenced in the Maldives.
"We will listen intently to opinions from all representatives," he said.
