President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that efforts are ongoing to cancel the dollar limit on Bank of Maldives cards.

The reversal of the dollar limit is among the pledges made during his campaign for the presidential election.

President Muizzu, currently in Turkey on his first official trip, on Monday met with Maldivians living in the country.

The Maldivian population residing in Turkey voiced concerns to the President about the dollar limit and the difficulties it causes. They appealed to him to resolve the issue promptly.

The President responded that efforts are ongoing to come up with a feasible solution to the current restrictions on card usage.

During the presidential campaign, President Muizzu himself has spoken about the many inconveniences presented to the public due to the card limit, and promised to remove the limit during his presidency.

At the time, the President said this reversal would be put into effect over a number of phases, where the first action would be to double the limit for the first three months, followed by the complete cancellation of the set limits. He said that this would be achieved through increasing dollar circulation in the country.

Another concern shared by those who attended the meeting was the absence of a Maldivian Embassy in Turkey. In response, the President said that efforts are being undertaken to establish an embassy in the country.
