Former President and leader of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Maumoon Abdul Gayoom on Monday filed his case at the National Integrity Commission (NIC) over being denied to hold a meeting with PPM members last Wednesday.
The meeting was scheduled to be held at the current PPM leader’s office Themaa house in Henveiru ward to gather the opinions and thoughts of members. However, two police officers had visited the Maumoon Foundations’ office to inform him that the meeting will not be allowed. As PPM leader Maumoon was not in office at the time, Police had informed the decision to his son and lawmaker, Faris Maumoon.
In the case filed at NIC against the two police officers, the deputy leader of PPM appointed by Maumoon’s faction of the ruling party, Aminath Nadhira stated that Police had not informed the reason behind the decision to deny the meeting. Noting that the Constitution provides freedom to hold peaceful gatherings without any permission of the state, she said that Police’ obstruction of the meeting has hindered PPM’s leader from gathering the opinion of party members.
Maumoon’s Office has already submitted the case to Police and the Human Rights Commission.
A previous function organized by Maumoon to celebrate PPM’s fifth anniversary had also been obstructed by the police.
