Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday has issued a request for all Maldivians in United Arab Emirates (UAE) to register at the Maldivian embassy after receiving confirmation that the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was detected in the country.

The Maldivian embassy at UAE stated that individuals are able to register online via the portal established by the embassy.

Due to the outbreak of the new strain of coronavirus that originated in Wuhan City, China, the Maldivian government has been advising any locals that are abroad to register at the Maldivian embassies located at the countries they are currently residing in.

The virus has already been detected in Malaysia and Sri Lanka, where many Maldivians live. In addition, the first case of the virus was confirmed in UAE on Wednesday.

As of now 5,974 infected cases have been detected in China alone while 132 people are dead.

Although the virus has not yet been found in Maldives, the state assured that precautionary measures are in place. Ministry of Health declared that all tourists entering the country will undergo a screening process and quarantine facilities are set up to isolate any suspect cases as well.
