Maldives police raided ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) leader’s office at Themaa ge in Henveiru ward over the investigation into alleged abolished files of the party.

The ongoing political dispute between former president and party leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and his half-brother and incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has divided PPM into two factions. Following the lower court's verdict to grant the full control of the party to its adviser President Yameen, his faction of PPM removed all the assets, administrative equipment and electoral forms submitted by members for the upcoming Local Council Elections from PPM office to their current activity hub at Dharubaaruge convention centre. Gayoom's faction has been using PPM's office as their headquarters since.

According to sources, the raid on the night of November 6 was conducted regarding a case issued by President Yameen's faction which accuses the opposing faction of formatting important information and agreements of the party saved in the hard drives of computers. However, the Secretary General of PPM from Gayoom's faction Abdul Aleem and Gayoom's lawmaker son Farish Maumoon have both denied the allegation.

SG Aleem and the assistant registrar of PPM Fathimath Shaheedha were presented to the Maldives' Police for inquiry regarding the investigation. Police also raided SG Aleem’s house in addition to PPM office with a court warrant.

Aleem confirmed that they were being investigated regarding the case issued by President Yameen's faction.

“I am hundred percent sure that all the documents and hard drives were taken by [President Yameen's Faction]. This is just a publicity stunt."

He also said that he was present until the last minute in the office and nothing would be formatted by him nor any other staff working in the office that time.
