Prosecutor General’s Office, on Monday, appealed the Criminal Court's verdict that acquitted Ibrahim Shah of all four charges concerning the untimely death of his wife, Ziyadha Naeem, in 2015.

Prosecutor General’s Office charged Shah, 40, on four counts over Ziyadha’s alleged rape incident.

According to local media Mihaaru, Shah was charged with marital rape, manslaughter, negligent homicide and possession of pornography, of which he was acquitted by the Criminal Court after a closed-door trial in March.

The Criminal Court’s verdict on the high-profile incident was met with public criticism and heavy backlash.

Prosecutor General’s Office alleged that the court acquitted Shah without referring to some of the evidence presented in the trial.

Maldives Police Service previously stated that Ziyadha, from Thinadhoo island in Gaaf Dhaalu Atoll, did not report the matter, only seeking treatment at Thinadhoo hospital days after the incident occurred, causing her injuries to worsen.

The doctors had recommended that she seek medical treatment in capital Male' immediately.

She was undergoing treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital before succumbing to her injuries.

Before passing away, Ziyadha told doctors that Shah had physically and sexually assaulted her after they separated.

During the investigation, police had corroborated 37 year old Ziyadha’s claims.

A post-mortem examination conducted in India indicated that her body exhibited signs of abuse, and that she had sustained several injuries to different organs of her body.
