Netherland's Van Oord affirms full adherence to environmental protection in the massive land reclamation project in Addu City.
Earlier, the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure had signed with Van Oord for the development project in March 2022.
Meanwhile, a press statement by the contractor affirms preparation works underway in the multiple islands of the city, though no actual date of project commencement was disclosed.
The contractor further affirmed it will deliver a completed project within the contractually agreed period of 18 months.
Commenced under a credit line facility from India's EXIM Bank, the project aims to reclaim lands from Hithadhoo, Maradhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo (all linked via the Addu City Link Road).
Apart from land reclamation, the contractor will carry out coastal protection components under the project which includes rock boulders and geo-tactile equipped breakwater systems.
The project attracted a wide-scale scrutiny and criticism by the public and various organizations including the Transparency Maldives, that had highlighted on the notable environmental impact a massive land reclamation effort.
Meanwhile, an individual complainant had lodged a case against Ministry of Planning at the Magistrate Court of Addu City Meedhoo.
The state aims to redirect industrial works of the city to the area that will be reclaimed, while creating prospective employment opportunities for the city's locals.
