Ooredoo Maldives donated 50 Intubation Boxes to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Wednesday, to help protect healthcare workers amid the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic.

In a press release, the telecom giant stated that it made the donation as safety measures and provision of necessary tools to protect healthcare workers is of utmost priority.

A transparent polycarbonate box designed in Taiwan, Intubation Boxes separate health workers from patients, who have difficulty in breathing, during the intubation procedure. This involves the insertion of a tube into a patient's trachea before connecting them to a ventilator, which without an Intubation Box would place healthcare workers at risk of infection as virus particles could be aerosolised during insertion.

Ooredoo highlighted that the Intubation Box design was modified to create a local prototype for Maldives by Metal Signs Private Limited, under the guidance of medical experts from state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

“There is no doubt in the importance of protecting the wellbeing of our service providers and healthcare workers who are risking their lives every day to keep our communities safe. It is our sincere hope that these Intubation Boxes will provide additional protection to the healthcare professionals who are at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19 and allow them to feel safer while performing their duties. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Metal Signs for their proactive efforts in the development of the local design of the Intubation Box, and ensuring a seamless and timely production of the equipment in order to hand them over to hospitals as soon as possible”, said Ooredoo Maldives' Acting Chief Commercial Officer, Hussain Niyaz, regarding the donation.

Ooredoo assured that it would continue to provide support, including digital solutions, in the prevention and response to COVID-19. Earlier this month, Ooredoo Maldives and its parent firm Ooredoo Group donated MVR 2.5 million to the Maldivian government as relief aid for the crisis. The company is also working with government agencies including the President’s Office, the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) and the Health Protection Agency (HPA) to support the national response to the pandemic.
