Maldivian athletes travel to Paris to join Olympics 2024

The Maldives Contingent has left this morning to travel to Paris to participate in the Olympic Games 2024 which is set to commence on Friday.

The Maldives Contingent has left this morning to travel to Paris to participate in the Olympic Games 2024 which is set to commence on Friday.

The team travelled on Qatar Airways. After a transit in Doha, the team will reach Paris tonight.

The Maldives Contingent consists of five athletes and eight officials.

The athletes are Table Tennis player Fathimath Dheema Ali, runner Ibadhulla Adam, swimmers Mohamed Aan Hussain and Aishath Ulya Shaig and Badminton player Fathimath Nabaha.

In addition to the four coaches of these four sports, Olympic Committee President Mohamed Abdul Sattar (Champy) and Chef de Mission Ahmed Munthagim and Olympic Committee Official Shifaz Ibrahim and Dheema's mother Aishath Waheedha are also travelling.

Out of the five Maldivian athletes, Dheema is the first Maldivian athlete to have qualified for the Olympics. She was qualified at the South Asian OIympic TT Qualifying Finals held in Nepal last May, playing and winning against Sri Lanka's Bimandi Bandara. The other athletes are participating through the special slots allocated to each country.

Dheema and Ibadhulla will serve as flag bearers for Maldives. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu presented the flag to these two athletes last Sunday.

This year's Olympics will include 329 events in 32 sports. The Olympics will also see participation from 10,714 athletes from 206 countries.
