The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, on Saturday hosted an event on the occasion of National Unity Day.
The event was was attended by Members of Parliament, resident Diplomatic Corps, and the staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A moment of prayer was observed in the memory of the loved ones lost 16 years ago to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and in gratitude to God for blessing Maldivians with the strength and patience to overcome the tragedies of that day.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid stressed on the importance of unity, solidarity in the face of adversity and to overcome challenges.
He noted that today as we remember one of the worst disasters our county faced, we are living through another.
He further added that the pandemic has reminded the world of a reality evident even back in 2004 - multilateral cooperation and collective action is the most effective way to overcome global challenges.
The National Unity Day is marked in remembrance of the Indian Ocean tsunami that hit Maldives on December 26, 2004.
