The Minister of National Planning and Infrastructure, Mohamed Aslam, has said that the evaluation of applications for land in Malé area will be completed by early June.

In response to a question raised by Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem in Parliament on Tuesday, Aslam said a committee is working to evaluate the application forms submitted for land.

The outcome of the submissions will be known by the end of May or early June, Aslam said.

Maafannu North MP Imthiyaz Fahmy also inquired about the 4,000 social housing units the government is building in the Malé area.

MP Imthiyaz, who supports former president and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed's faction "Fikurrege Dhirun" ("reviving an ideology" in Dhivehi) within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), highlighted how the government had shown a "dummy bedroom" ahead of the party's primary elections and asked how many sheets were yet to be laid.

Aslam said that he did not know exactly how far along the project, carried out by two Indian companies, had progressed. However, the concrete work on some of the flats has been completed, and finishing work has already begun, he said.

“I can surely say that there is a good amount of progress,” Aslam said.

More than 15,000 people have applied for the 3,000 plots to be allocated in the Malé area. The proposals are being evaluated, and the land and flats will be handed over before the end of this term, according to the government.
