National Drug Agency (NDA) has decided to set up drug rehabilitation centers in three atolls, including Laamu Atoll.

The agency stated that it has held discussions with local and foreign parties to establish rehabilitation services as outlined in the Drugs Act.

They said that the cabinet has advised the establishment on a community based rehabilitation programme.

Based on this, the agency has come to the decision to establish such rehabilitation centers in three different regions of the country.

NDA said that a team had travelled to several islands in Laamu Atoll from last Wednesday to conduct surveys on the drug abuse situation within the atoll, so as to help them determine which island to set up the rehabilitation center in.

NDA CEO Imad Solih and Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology's Senior Political Director Ismail Ibrahim also took part in this survey trip, meeting with the island councils to further understand the community situation.

The team travelled to the islands of Fonadhoo, Gan, Maavah, Isdhoo, Kalaidhoo, Hithadhoo, Mundu, Kunahandhoo, Gaadhoo and Maabaidhoo in Laamu Atoll.

NDA said that they would be meeting with the atoll council as well before deciding on which island the rehabilitation center will be placed on.

On January 15, NDA announced for applications from private entities interested in running drug rehabilitation centers.

Drug rehabilitation centers are mandated to provide out patient detoxification services, psychiatric evaluation, counselling, drug tests, psychosocial therapy, and psychological assessments.

As per the latest statistics released by NDA, there are 700 individuals on the waiting list to receive drug rehabilitation treatment after having been sentenced from the drug court. The agency said that they are making every effort to expedite provision of services to these persons, estimating that treatment for all on the list can be completed within the next four months.
