National Bureau of Statistics on Monday revealed that despite an increase in beds provided for tourism, the bed occupancy rate is at 62.1 percent.

According to the statistics, there were 43,026 registered tourist beds by the end of last year. Comparatively, this is an increase by 3,490 beds from 2017.

With the increase in registered beds, the sale of beds increased by one percent. Accordingly, the amount of occupancy for registered beds in 2017 was 61.1 percent.

In 2018, tourist beds were registered in 825 places across Maldives, including 31,741 beds registered by 145 resorts. However, only 30,438 of the beds were sold, while hotels and guesthouses registered 10,425 beds, and 9,759 were in use.

Liveaboards' operation in Maldives registered 2,758 beds in 2018. However, only 28 percent were sold.

With the expanding tourism sector, average increments of 3,000 beds occurred over the past seven years. Accordingly, the number of beds increased by 16,000 during this period.

While 1.4 million tourists arrived in Maldives in 2018, this was an increase of tourist arrivals compared to other years. The majority of tourists that arrived in Maldives were from countries in Europe.
