The increase in the fee charged on safaris docked in Fuvahmulah to USD 500 (MVR 7,710) has been reduced due to concerns.

A member of the city council told "Mihaaru" that two different prices have been decided on during the meeting held to revise the fees charged from safaris.

Prices set for safaris:

- Safaris less than 100 feet: USD 150 (MVR 2,313) per day.

- Safaris over 100 feet: USD 200 (MVR 3,084) per day.

The council said that the fees will have to be paid starting from the 21st of this month.

National Boating Association of Maldives (NBAM) has expressed concern over the increase in fees charged for safaris in Fuvahmulah City. The association described the decision to charge high fees only for safaris as discrimination.

The decision to increase the fee charged on safaris entering Fuvahmulah City's port from USD 50 to USD 500 was made at the council's general meeting held on January 12.

Fuvahmulah Council said that the decision to increase the fees charged by safaris was made as part of discussions held to resolve the issue of space constraints of the island's harbor. The decision was made with the support of all council members.

Fuvahmulah is one of the most visited islands in the Maldives. On average six safaris enter the island's port every day. On days where the port is full, there are many safaris at sea near the island.
