President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom bestowed the National Award of Honour and the National Award of recognition on Thursday evening.
The awards were presented at an official function held at the Republic Square to celebrate the 53rd Independence Day of Maldives.
This year, five honourees received the National Award of Honour and fifteen honorees received the National Award of Recognition.
The recipients of the National Award of Honour were presented with a shield of honor, a badge of honor and a commemorative plaque while the recipients of the National Award of Recognition were given a commemorative plaque and a certificate.
The President gave special awards to those who had graduated with honors and two others who were the first to receive postgraduate doctoral degrees (PhD) from the National University.
International award winners from different competitions were also presented with special awards during the ceremony.
Apart from this, seven people were given special awards by the President for memorizing the entire Quran.
Students who recieved top marks from GCSE O'level and A'level world rankings in the 2017 exams, were recognized and awarded with medals as well.
