President Solih presents National Awards of Honour, National Awards of Recognition

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Saturday, bestowed National Awards to 38 persons of note; the 'Award of Honour' going to 14 individuals, while the 'Award of Recognition' was handed to 24 individuals.

Recipients were presented with the honours at an official ceremony held at Republic Square to mark National Unity Day.

A total of six individuals, from the 14 recipients shortlisted by the National Awards Committee, had previously been granted a National Award of Recognition.

The 14 honourees who received the National Award of Honour

- Mohamed Rasheed, for his contributions to Dhivehi literature and the Dhivehi Language

- Abdul Azeez Jamal Abu- bakur, for his contributions to Dhivehi literature and the Dhivehi Language

- Mohamed Waheed (Posthumous), for his contributions to Dhivehi Literature and the Dhivehi Language

- Ibrahim Waheed, for his contributions to Dhivehi Literature and the Dhivehi Language

- Dr Naila Ibrahim Mohamed Didi, for her contributions to the Health Sector

- Adnan Ali, for his contributions to the Fisheries Sector

- Ahmed Saleem, for his contributions to the Tourism Sector

- Mohamed Waheed, for his contributions to the Agriculture Sector

- Mariam Waheeda, for her contributions in Social work

- Moomina Ibrahim, for her contributions in Disseminating News and Information

National Award for Special Achievement and Special Medal for Memorising the Holy Quran

The National Award for Special Achievement was granted to 24 individuals while four individuals that memorised the Holy Quran entirely while attaining the highest grade received medals.

Recipients included Dr Naushad Mohamed, who achieved an exceptional distinction in completing studies at MQA rank 10, 13 individuals who achieved the highest rank in an academic or training course, and six individuals who attained the highest rank in an international competition or exhibition.

The following 13 individuals were presented with the National Award for Special Achievement for attaining the highest rank in a higher academic course.

- Uzma Abdul Latheef: Master’s Degree

- Ahmed Fizal: Master’s Degree

The following six individuals received the National Award for Special Achievement for securing the highest rank in an international exhibition or competition.

Orders of Dignified Rule

President Solih bestowed the Order of the Dignified Rule of the Muleege Dynasty on Ibrahim Ismail Ali and the Order of the Dignified Rule of the Dhiyamigili Dynasty to Badru Naseer.

Ibrahim Ismail Ali is well known for his achievements in sports and contributing to the development of the sector. He served in multiple government positions since joining the Ministry of Health in 1970 and attained higher education in teaching from Australia, India and the United States of America.

Additionally, Ibrahim Ismail Ali served as the first captain of the National Football Team and was named the Best Midfield Player for eight years. He is a decorated referee of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and also served as a member of the Maldives Olympic Committee and the Football Association of Maldives (FAM).

Since joining the broadcast sector in 1967 as an operator, Badru Naseer served in the broadcasting sector for more than 40 years. He has completed several training programmes in production and presenting in Singapore, Netherlands and Australia, making him the first Maldivian to achieve higher education in radio broadcasting from abroad.

Badru was instrumental in developing programmes for Radio Maldives in 1980 as well as the project to enhance radio coverage across the country. Despite switching to the private sector in 1995, he returned to his previous designation as Director General at Dhivehi Raajjeyge Adu in 2004. After retiring from his position in 2011, he served as the president of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission until 2013.

President Solih congratulated all individuals that received National Awards for 2020 during his speech at the ceremony.

The president was accompanied by First Lady Fazna Ahmed, Vice President Faisal Naseem, cabinet ministers, state and foreign dignitaries, as well as officials of government offices and institutions.
