Opposition parties have stated that despite Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon's detainment during the past year, the opposition has been continuing efforts to reform the functioning of the current government.
Opposition parties, in a statement, revealed that Faris was arrested in order to hinder his reformatory work towards the government’s graft and theft from the state.
The statement noted that 12 lawmakers ousted from the parliament had sacrificed their seats in efforts to reform the government’s actions.
The statement further called on the public to vote for and elect opposition coalition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential candidate and Jumhooree Party (JP) running mate despite obstructions faced by the opposition towards the upcoming presidential election.
Faris is currently undergoing trial over terrorism charges for orchestrating an alleged coup plot after the landmark February 1 Supreme Court ruling and bribery charges over allegedly bribing lawmakers ahead of the parliament speaker Abdulla Maseeh’s censure vote.
MP Faris was also found guilty of identity fraud due his involvement in an unsanctioned press conference exploiting the flag and logo of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), at a press conference held with the opposition coalition last year. He is currently serving a sentence of four months and twenty four days in prison for identity fraud.
Faris’ father, former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, is also serving a 19-month prison sentence on charges pertaining to the obstruction of justice since his conviction on June 13.
