President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that a Public Works unit will be established in each atoll to oversee repair and renovation works.
In his final stop of the visit to 11 islands in Raa atoll, in the island of Maakurathu, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu stated that infrastructure in islands is built with significant expenses, and yet extensive funds go into renovation later due to lack of proper maintenance. To resolve this, he aims to establish Public Works units in each atoll.
He said that this would be a positive investment, and not a waste of funds considering the expenses it would save through preventing the need for major repairs made necessary through years of insufficient maintenance.
"Establishing Public Works units in atolls will, in the long term, show a significant decrease in expenses on conducting repairs in such infrastructure in islands," he said.
Speaking to the people of Maakurathu, the President said that there is much to be done in the way of development on the island. He said that circumstances had prevented the implementation of such projects earlier, with some efforts having been decided upon even as early as when he had been serving as Housing Minister.
This includes resolving space constraints at the harbour and establishing a Public Works unit. He pledged to resolve these in the coming days.
The President assured the people of Maakurathu that he would also develop the island's health centre, provide facilities necessary for the island's school, provide facilities for sports and resolve housing issues.
He said that implementation of a housing project in Maakurathu would be included in the budget that will be proposed for the next year.
