The government of Maldives has decided to allocate the 90,000 square feet land area in front of the Hulhumalé Cemetery as a parking space.

With this decision, Housing Development Corporation (HDC) is now working on clearing and levelling the ground of the plot, which is opposite of the Police flats.

Speaking to reporters in the area, Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen said one of the biggest concerns of taxi and other vehicle drivers is the lack of parking space.

The 90,000 square feet of land will be used temporarily to resolve the issue and make Malé and Hulhumalé a safer place, he said.

Of this, 50,000 square feet will be reserved for parking of taxis and other vehicles, the minister said. The remaining 40,000 square feet will be vacated for vehicles towed by Police, he explained.

"Hopefully parking will be possible here within the next two days," he added.

Ameen clarified that this space will be used for parking only as a temporary measure until dedicated parking buildings are developed in Hulhumalé.

HDC has currently opened the opportunity to submit proposals for constructing 4,000 units of parking buildings. The work will bring a major solution to the parking problem, the minister said.
