A man and a woman passed away in Noonu Atoll's Holhudhoo in the early hours of Sunday, after they lost control of their motorcycle and fell into the island's lagoon.

The two were Ahmed Adeel and Husna Mohamed, both 26 years of age.

Holhudhoo Island Council stated that the two friends had been speeding while out on a drive, and lost control of their motorbike, sending them skidding off the quay and into the lagoon.

They were spotted by some of the island residents.

"Neither of them were moving when we pulled them out," said a councillor, confirming that the two had already passed by the time help arrived.

The police stated that they received report of the accident around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning. They added that the motorcycle had been badly damaged.

"We received information that the two victims were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The investigation is currently underway," said the police spokesperson.
