Maldives records another 1,007 COVID-19 cases

Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Saturday announced that 1,007 tested positive for COVID-19.

Out of the over thousand people that were confirmed to have COVID-19, 821 cases were collected between 1800hrs of Friday and 1800hrs of Saturday. 186 samples that tested positive were collected prior to that. HPA has been working to clear a backlog of samples collected.

The additional confirmed cases has increased the total positives till date to 43,782. There are 15,666 active cases.

Meanwhile, 341 people made full recoveries, bringing the total figure to 28,013.

HPA revealed that of the new cases, 793 were from the Greater Male’ Area while 183 cases were from residential islands, 26 from operational resorts and five from liveaboards.

Maldives is currently in its worst COVID wave still date. The fatality rate has increased rapidly. So far 22 people have passed away due to COVID this month alone, bringing up the number of fatalities to 96.

To curb the rapid spread of COVID-19 in Maldives, HPA has strengthened the restrictive measures. This includes increasing curfew hours and extending the curfew duration as well.

On March 12, 2020, WHO classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. To date, the new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 163.1 million people and claimed over 3.38 million lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 142 million people have recoveries.
