Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Sunday announced that 508 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Maldives, while 134 recovered from the disease.

This was the highest number of positive cases in the country within a 24 hour period, breaking the record of 464 cases recorded on April 28, just four days earlier.

HPA revealed that of the new cases, 276 were from the greater Male’ region, 185 cases from residential islands, 12 cases from operational resorts, three from liveaboards and 32 from industrial islands.

Although the number of cases started to decline earlier in April, figures have been rapidly increasing recently.

In order to control the new surge of cases. HPA on Sunday announced that starting from Tuesday, April 4, travel between the islands will be restricted, with the exception of the greater Male' area. The restrictions are to be placed for one week.

Currently, the island nation records a total of 30,745 virus cases of which 5,594 are active cases, in addition to 25,068 recoveries and 74 deaths.

On March 12, 2020, WHO classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. To date, the new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 153 million people and claimed over 3.2 million lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 131 million people have recovered.
