Maldives to open an embassy in South Africa for the first time.

In the ceremony held in the President's Office on Tuesday the newly appointed South African ambassador Sandile Edwin Schalk presented his credentials to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. He said the embassy would be opened in the capital of South Africa, in Pretoria. This would be the first time a Maldivian embassy would be built in South Africa.

President Solih noted that opening this embassy would improve the diplomatic relationship between the two nations.

He noted that South Africa is an important partner of the Maldives. He also said that the two countries would further strengthen the relations in areas of mutual interest.

The President's Office said they discussed matters of tourism, infrastructural development, as well international relations.

Diplomatic relations between Maldives and South Africa was established on July 27, 1994.
