Maldives records 1,501 new COVID-19 cases

Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Tuesday announced that 1,501 tested positive for COVID-19, while 248 people recovered.

With the current surge, the daily confirmed COVID positives keep setting a new record every consecutive day.

HPA has been working to clear a backlog of samples collected, and as such, out of the over 1,500 samples that tested positive today, only 662 samples were collected within the past 24 hours. A total of 6,208 samples were tested from 1800hrs Monday to 1800hrs Tuesday.

This increased the confirmed COVID cases in the country to a total of 38,520.

Meanwhile, 248 people made full recoveries, bringing the total figure to 26,795 till date.

HPA revealed that of the new cases, 1,229 were from the greater Male’ region while 265 cases were from residential islands and seven cases from operational resorts.

Maldives is currently in its worst COVID wave still date. The fatality rate has increased rapidly. Although only a few days into May, Maldives has seen 14 COVID fatalities within the month already. The most recorded fatalities previously was in February of this year, with 10 deaths.

Currently there are 11,629 active cases in the country.

In the media briefing by Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) on Tuesday evening, Spokesperson to the President, Mohamed Mabrook Azeez revealed that five islands in Maldives currently had over 100 people that were COVID positive, B. Eydhafushi, Lh. Naifaru, K. Hinmafushi, K. Maafushi and AA. Ukulhas.

To curb the rapid spread of COVID-19 in Maldives, HPA has strengthened the restrictive measures. This includes increasing curfew hours and extending the curfew duration as well.

On March 12, 2020, WHO classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. To date, the new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 160 million people and claimed over 3.3 million lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 138 million people have recovered.
