The opposition coalition have agreed to put forth a presidential candidate representing the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) accompanied by a running mate from Jumhooree Party (JP) to contest in the upcoming presidential elections.

The decision was made tonight, by the “18, 19” committee, with the intention of strengthening collaboration within the opposition coalition, in anticipation of the imminent presidential election, as well as next year’s parliamentary elections.

However, the opposition is yet to produce a unanimous presidential candidate or running mate.

As former Mohamed Nasheed has reportedly forfeited the MDP presidential candidacy, speculation is rife that the ticket will be offered to MDP parliamentary group leader, representative of the Hinnavaru constituency Mohamed Solih (Iboo). A final decision on the matter will be revealed at the MDP Congress to be held at AA. Ukulhas.

A date for announcing JP’s candidate for running mate has not yet been confirmed.

According to the opposition coalition headed by Nasheed, along with ex president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, JP Leader Qasim Ibrahim and Adhaalath Party President Imran Abdullah, a unified decision to elect an MDP candidate as well as a JP candidate during the upcoming presidential elections slated to be held on the 23rd of September is already a victorious mark.
