Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been appointed as the sole operator of ferries from capital Male to reclaimed suburb Hulhumale, instead of the joint transport company founded by MTCC, Maldives Airports Company (MACL) and Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).

MTCC’s managing director Ibrahim Abdul Razzzag Haleem confirmed the decision Tuesday, stating that MTCC is to operate the Male-Hulhumale ferries instead of the “Transport for Maldives” company.

He did not state the reasons behind the decision.

“The government has concluded that we are to continue with the ferry service on our own. [Transport for Maldives] was founded to provide the ferry service jointly from all three companies [MTCC, MACL, MPL]. However, it has been decided that [ferry service] will proceed as before,” said Haleem.

He stated that a decision has not been reached regarding Transport for Maldives yet, saying that it may be continued as a subsidiary of MTCC instead of being terminated.

Transport for Maldives, which was founded in 2015, had originally planned to commence services earlier this year.
