The Ministry of Education has published a tentative academic calendar for 2025, adjusting the annual school holidays to begin on December 28.

In 2021, the school holiday period was moved to June/July, aligning with the Maldives' wet season, which posed travel challenges for students, families, and teachers.

During last years presidential campaign, many requested President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to revert the academic year start to its pre-covid schedule in January. Changing the annual school holiday period back to December is one of President Muizzu's first 100 day pledges.

The tentative 2025 calendar shows that the academic year will commence on April 6, with teachers required to report on April 3.

First term holidays are scheduled for July 28 to August 7, with the second term starting on August 10. A second term mid-break will run from September 21 to 25.

The second term will end on December 25, when report cards will be handed over, marking the start of the annual school holiday from December 28 to January 22. The academic year for 2026 is slated to begin on January 27.

Previously, the Maldives’ academic year started in January. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was extended by six months, with the new academic year shifted to begin on August in 2021. The new academic has began in August for the past three years.

Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu in an earlier interview with Mihaaru News said that amendments to the Education Act are underway to prevent future changes to the academic calendar with each new government.
