Criminal Court has today sentenced to a five year prison term a man accused of mugging an individual and stealing MVR 1.3 million on a street in capital Male' City.
The convicted individual is Mohamed Sham'aan Saleem of Galolhu Hiyaroadhi.
Sham'aan was charged in the case of two assailants threatening the owner and an employee of a money exchange company with a knife on a street and robbing MVR 900,000 and USD 27,000 (MVR 400,000) from them. The incident occurred in August, 2017.
The Criminal Court ruling said that witness statements prove that it was Sham'aan who was riding the motorcycle on which the two assailants came to the scene. Video footage submitted by the State further support this, and hence the Court ruled he was guilty.
The verdict by Judge Ali Adam said that although the actual sentence for the crime is an 8 year prison sentence, the court is sentencing him to 5 years and 1 month. This is because the court took into consideration the 2 years and 10 months he has already spent in custody in relation to the case.
